2008/2009 Xebra Sedan (hatchback) review

Mark LaPedus took a spin of Zap's latest Xebra sedan which now has a five-door hatchback design. He wrote a review of his test drive that is available over at EETimes.com. Here is the direct web address:

Welcome

Hello Everyone,

As far as I am aware this is the first social networking site dedicated to discussion about the Xebra! If you are not familiar with the Xebra then this is a good place to learn more about this vehicle.

Below is my introduction to the Xebra.

According to Zap's website "the Xebra is the offspring of three decades of thought and evolution" As far as I am aware the Xebra is the only EV in the United States sold for under $15,00 that is not limited by the government as a low speed… Continue

The gas upgrade fizzled out when after charging at work for 4 hours I went to leave with no forward or reverse. A month later & I've decided to go ahead and make the 3.5 hour trip to my nearest dealer in West Palm Beach. I've checked and tried everything. Part of me hopes it's something simple yet would rather it be something a little more intricate that I in no way would have discovered on my own. Needless to say I really couldn't do much work on a dead horse. The xebra yahoo forum is just about as much good as having the dealer try & diagnose the problem over the phone, doesn't work so well. Concerning the 13Hp upgrade, I'm hesitant over purchasing an industrial grade centrifugal clutch just for a prototype that may or not work after shelling out $200. Wish it were a more common part that could be returned to a store shelf it it didn't work as planned. Several folks have suggested I go with a torque converter instead. I only want belt drive 'cause it's the cleanest & quietest. We've already got the tensioner pulley about mastered so we're almost there. Our wheel hub has an interchangeable pulley to help discover the correct ration with ease. A few missing links and hopefully it will work. My only consolation concerning the impulse purchase of the zap is the "farm use" on our recent tax deductions since we haven't put a whole lotta miles on it & besides if we'd had purchased the Mini-Cooper instead we'd be paying more than just $14 a month for insurance. Thanks for asking-adam
